College football’s becoming stranger than fiction

We’re all human, we all make mistakes, and nobody’s perfect. Each maxim basically means the same thing – human beings screw up.
In light of that, I’ve always thought there were a few exceptions to the rule. Important influential adults like fathers, ministers, and college football head- coaches always seemed able to rise above the crowd and provide guidance by example.
Recently some of the last group I mentioned above – the head-coaches - seem to have forgotten the importance of setting proper examples on how to avoid the pitfalls of life and be a good person. In fact, some of these supposed leaders have somehow managed to become bad stories.
Truthfully, the drama surrounding some of their actions is really pathetic. In my opinion there are some coaches out there who lack morals and ethics.
Here are some of their stories:
We can start with former Tennessee coach Lane Kiffin. Wow! Is this guy a shining portrait of immaturity or what? Even though Kiffin’s on the West coast now, the results from his antics will take years for the Vol nation to completely forget. After hearing him pop- off a few times on camera – early on - it became clear to me that Kiffin simply wasn’t the type of individual that I would want my son to imitate or admire. Kiffin was consistent – everything he did was wrong. I still don’t understand what Southern California sees in the boy.
How about the Ole Miss “pseudo-preacher” Houston Dale Nutt? Actually, I think his last name fits him well. Here’s the problem: Nutt wants to be respected and ultimately considered as a top-flight SEC coach. Yet, he’s willing to sell his soul to the devil to win, and he doesn’t seem concerned with the cost – in terms of the negative effects of signing troubled quarterback Jeremiah Masoli. Concerned parents might shy away from Nutt in the future, especially now that they know he has no loyalty to anyone but himself.
You could send your kid down to Tallahassee. Of course, the legendary teacher Bobby Bowden is no longer there to raise your boy right and make him a good man. After leading the Seminoles to “Bryant-like” years, Bowden was quickly shoved out by a cabal of impatient boosters and the “coach-in-waiting” Jimbo Fisher. Finally, Florida State is about to get their wish. Jimbo Fisher is a brash, confident young man but he is also a “rookie”. Following a football icon like Bowden can be a disaster. I’ve got some bad news for Fisher.
I’ll tell you what – if your son’s a quarterback and you like Russian roulette – send him down to the Plains of Auburn to sling the rock. He may get signed, work his way through years of preparation, and be on the verge of starting for the mighty Tigers, only to be reduced to riding the pine behind some junior college All-American. In essence, Gene Chizik wants his quarterback recruits to work hard, study film, hit the weights, perform well, yet he may still sell them all out in order to keep his $2 million-a- year job. I don’t think any reasonable person would call the shenanigans that Chizik’s been pulling on his signal callers classy or fair.
Les Miles is a fine man. He looks like a man you would want to train your son in the ways of the world. Les projects well. And yes, you can ask the LSU head coach just about anything. However, there are two topics I’ll recommend that you stay away from. One is the BP oil spill and its effect on the coast of Louisiana, the other is clock management as it applies to the two-minute offense. Think about it for a minute. If the head coach – whose only job is to manage the clock – can’t work the clock, he’s a choke. I bet Miles wouldn’t tolerate that from his players. Why should the fans have to take it from him?
Look across to South Carolina. They have a ball coach who’s reduced himself to name-calling. I wonder if Steve Spurrier is passing the trait along to his team. Spurrier recently needled new Tennessee coach Derek Dooley about the Vols backing out of a game with lowly North Carolina. I remember when Steve used to let his team do all the talking on the field. Besides, running the mouth provides too much bulletin board material for the other team to feed on. Besides, whom is Spurrier trying to impress? He has better things to do – like trying to win more than 6-7 games a year.
Let’s not forget Florida coach Urban Meyer’s meltdown that followed the SEC championship game. Meyer gave his players a clinic on waffling and indecision. I’m sure all parents want their son to mimic Meyer’s winning attributes, but I also doubt they would ever want to see that son pull a stunt like Urban did that particular night. Meyer is a very good football coach, but he is also a bit eccentric. The Florida coach escaped being labeled a “quitter” after the championship last year. He can’t afford a repeat. The resulting PR disaster would be a circus.
I’ll summarize by saying that I don’t expect these guys I’ve been talking about to be perfect – no one will ever be. But, I still have reservations about every one of them. Anybody with half a brain can see that their past actions promote doubt.
